How to ask and answer using ใช่ไหม

You should recall that when you ask for someone's name using ใช่ไหม (châi-mǎi), you are confirming that the name is what you think it is. ใช่ไหม is like saying the English phrase isn't that right?

เขาชื่อปรีชาใช่ไหมครับ
(kǎo chûu pree-chaa châi-mǎi kráp)
His name is Preecha, right?

When using the demonstrative pronouns to ask if you are correct, use exactly the same format.

นี่ปากกา ใช่ไหม
(nêe bpàak-gaa châi-mǎi)
this is a pen, right?

With both of these questions, the easiest way to confirm is simply:

ครับ
(kráp)
yes - affirmative response
ค่ะ
(kâ)
yes - affirmative response

However, if you need to answer No. It is not a . . . you will need to use ไม่ใช่ (mâi-châi), and you should always continue by stating the correct name.

ไม่ใช่
(mâi châi)
no; negative
นั่นไม่ใช่ปากกา
(nûn mâi-châi bpàak-gaa)
that is not a pen
นั่นดินสอ
(nûn din-sǎw)
that is a pencil
