Replying and Correcting

Whenever you use the words ไม่ใช่ in response to a question, you will usually follow with a statement that corrects whatever was wrong. Where someone is asking your name, you have a couple of options for correcting them.

Example question:

คุณ ชื่อ วินัย ใช่ไหม
Your name's Winai, right?

Answer type one:

ไม่ ใช่ ครับ
ผม ชื่อ สมชาย
ไม่ใช่ วินัย
No. It isn't.
My name's Somchai.
Not Winai.

Answer type two:

ไม่ ใช่ ครับ
ผม ชื่อ สมชาย
ผม ไม่ได้ ชื่อ วินัย
No. It isn't.
My name's Somchai.
I was not named Winai.

Note that ไม่ ใช่ mâi-châi can appear before a name (a noun) but not before ชื่อ (a verb). ไม่ได้ must be used before ชื่อ.

In the example above, ไม่ใช่ means is not, where ไม่ได้ means was not. ไม่ได้ is used to refer to things that happened in the past, but also as can not when talking about certain types of verbs. We will learn how to talk about future, present, and past in an upcoming lesson.
