Learning the Names of Things

Last time we made basic statements using นี่ อะไร, which means what is this? You'll need to understand and use another form of asking what something is, using the verb เรียกว่า (rîak-wâa).

เรียกว่า
(rîak-wâa)
to be called

In casual conversations you will hear both of these phrases, so you'll need to recognize them and understand the difference:

นี่ อะไร
(nêe à-rai)
What is this?
นี่ เรียกว่า อะไร
(nêe rîak-wâa à-rai)
What is this called? (noun name)

To answer either question, just replace the word อะไร (à-rai) with the noun. Until you get more practice, try to answer using เรียกว่า (rîak-wâa) if the question uses it, but it's fine to use either form. You will be understood.

นั่นเรียกว่าอะไร
(nûn rîak-wâa à-rai)
What is that called?
นั่นเรียกว่าหมา
(nûn rîak-wâa mǎa)
That is called dog.
นั่นหมา
(nûn mǎa)
That is a dog.
